Anne Lister, 1791-1840, era una proprietaria terriera, imprenditrice, viaggiatrice e scrittrice di diari. Fu anche una lesbica che, nonostante in quegli anni fosse quasi obbligatorio tenere ufficialmente segreto il proprio orientamento, sfidò le convenzioni sociali vivendo apertamente con la propria compagna. Anne tenne un diario dettagliato della propria vita, dei suoi amori e delle sue emozioni, raccontate minuziosamente con quattro milioni di parole. Gran parte dei diari erano scritti in codice che solo oggi sono stati decifrati, portando così to light the amazing story of what has been called the first modern lesbian England.
These diaries are the basis of this film produced by BBC2, a film which, because of its importance and quality, was chosen for the inauguration of the 24th London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. The head of BBC2, Janice Hadlow, said: "The film is set in the same world raccontatoci novels of the Brontë sisters, but here the story is quite different, and makes us understand how life in Yorkshire in the 19th century was much more rich, varied and amazing what we have read in those novels. "
